Middle School Literacy Curriculum

The Middle School Literacy program revolves around a balanced literacy approach that provides opportunities for real life reading and writing experiences. Goals include development of discussion skills, reading and writing for varied purposes, appreciation of reading and writing, and fostering creativity and discovery. Novels, short stories, drama, poetry, literature response journals, reference books, and periodicals are utilized to achieve these goals. Using the Words to Go text helps promote increased student vocabulary strategies and the Prentice Hall Literature text ensures that students are exposed to a wide range of literary genres. To foster independent reading, all students participate in a Readers Workshop Program and the Accelerated Reader program.
